Tolls: $5 each way ($1 Inner Harbor Tunnel,
$2 at exit 93, and $2 at exit 5 on DELaware TPK). Take I-95 N
thru Baltimore Inner Harbor Tunnel, and continue to follow
signs for Delaware Bridge and/or NJTPK (New Jersey Turnpike).
Immediately after crossing Delaware Bay bridge, stay in 2nd
lane from left, and take first exit 40E for Atlantic City (just
1/4 mile before first NJ TPK toll booth). You have two
choices now.
a) (slower, easier) Drive
approximately 60 miles on 40E until you arrive at
Pleasantville NJ (behind tall Hampton Inn on right).
This route is prone to lots of farm/truck/beach traffic that
can slow you down, and you must remain alert to several
places where you have to turn left or right to remain on RT
40, OR
b) (faster, but more error prone).
Drive 15 miles to first traffic circle (about 3-4 miles past
Woodstown). Drive 3/4 way around circle (past Amoco), and
bear SHARP RIGHT onto 604E for Monroeville and/or
Franklinville. In Franklinville (RR tracks, Amoco, 5 way
interesection, Rt 47 ), go straight thru and remain on 538E.
Turn right onto small rural road: Old BlackHorse Pike Road.
Old Blackhorse is just around the "left bend of the road
with ORANGE CIRCLE Hospitality Lake sign on the left".
Drive about 1/2 mile on Old BlackHorse and it will merge onto
322E, near "Le Gals" on left. (NOTE: if you miss
Old BlackHorse Road turn, 538E will T with 322 shortly after
Hospitality Lake, where you can turn right on 322E).
Stay on 322E, it will become Rt 40E at Hamilton Mall.
IMPORTANT: This route is
very hard to follow on the return leg (NJ to DC), for several
reasons: first, 538W turn-off from 322W is not marked, and
second, there is a place where 538 splits off to right and
604 begins (you must stay left onto 604W).
